11 Jan Power Over Powerlessness: Authors on Recovery
Laura McKowen, upon reading Dan Peres’ memoir, As Needed for Pain:
“I was lucky enough to get an advanced copy and I read it in two days. I’ve read what feels like a gazillion addiction memoirs, but none about opioid addiction, and far fewer men’s stories than women’s. Dan was the Editor in Chief of Details magazine and was swallowing sixty+ pills a day for half that time. He had a big, fancy, powerful career and was crushed by insecurity, self-loathing, and one hell of an addiction.
I loved this book because he’s smart, wry, funny, and it gave me a glimpse into a world I could imagine but haven’t experienced first hand. There were a lot of LOL moments and a ton of NOOOOOOO! ones too.”

Dan Peres was editor in chief of Details for fifteen years, starting in 2000, when the title relaunched under his leadership. During his tenure, the magazine won many awards, including two National Magazine Awards. Before taking the editorship of Details, Dan spent nine years at W magazine, overseeing bureaus in Paris, London, and Milan. Peres’s career as an editor at W magazine and Details is well known, but little is known about his private life as a high-functioning drug addict. In As Needed for Pain, Peres lays bare, for the first time, the extent of his drug use, and how he found his way back from a killing addiction.
